First, there was the CBZ. A motorcycle that ushered in high-performance motorcycling for the masses. Then, of course, the Bajaj Pulsar came in, and the CBZ was relegated to the background until it finally disappeared. The Pulsar still exists and is in good health. But Hero hasn’t been able to mount a successful comeback since. Not for not trying, yes. We’ve seen the arrival of characters like Hunk, Achiever, and Xtreme, in various guises to break Pulsar’s dominance. But nothing worked.
Hero Xtreme 160R is a commuter bike available in 2 variants in India. Its lower version starts with a price of Rs. 1,03,364 (ex-showroom) and the higher version with a price of Rs. 1,06,374 (ex-showroom). Hero Xtreme 160R generates 15 hp of power and 14 nm of torque from its 163 cc engine. The Xtreme 160R’s single-cylinder engine has a 5-speed manual gearbox. Both the rear and front brakes on the Hero Xtreme 160R are drum brakes. This 138.5 kg bike is available in 3 colors.
The Xtreme 160R is Hero’s newest entrant in the 150-160cc sport passenger segment in India. The motorcycle is a replacement for the now discontinued Xtreme Sports, which failed to touch the hearts of many buyers in the country during its existence.
Now, just before the new Bharat Stage 6 emissions regulations take effect from April 1, 2020, Hero MotoCorp unveiled the new 160cc motorcycle, reviving the Xtreme nickname, but this time, with a new engine. a slightly larger 160 cc, new chassis and with a new design. We briefly tested the new Xtreme 160R to get an idea of what it offers, in a segment that already has two very nice offerings in the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V and the Suzuki Gixxer.
Design: The Hero Xtreme 160R has compact dimensions, but has a busy, muscular style that sets it apart from its competitors. The handlebars, powertrain and alloy wheels have a black-out finish, while the rear grab bar has been integrated into the bodywork. The Xtreme 160R was exhibited in a two-tone paint job, white and gray. When it launches, expect the motorcycle to be available in more colors.
Features: The Hero Xtreme 160R is the only motorcycle in its segment that gets fully LED lighting, i.e. LED headlight, LED taillight, and LED turn indicators. Its fully digital instrument console features a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge and clock. However, you lose a gear position indicator, which the Suzuki Gixxer gets. She also receives a hazard lamp, another segment first.
Specifications: The Hero Xtreme 160R is powered by a BS6 compliant, air-cooled fuel injection engine. Delivers 15.2PS and 14Nm. Despite being a 2-valve engine, it is one of the most powerful motorcycles in its segment, only overshadowed by the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V whose 4-valve engine delivers 16PS and 14.1Nm. The Xtreme 160R has a 5-speed gearbox.
Basics: The Hero Xtreme 160R has a diamond-type frame with telescopic forks and a 7-step adjustable preload monoshock. Braking is done via a 276mm front disc and 130mm drum (220mm disc optional) with single-channel ABS as standard. You get MRF REVZ tires with the rear as a 130 section radial unit.
Variants: The Hero Xtreme 160R will be available in two variants: rear disc and rear drum.
Competition: The Hero Xtreme 160R competes with the Bajaj Pulsar NS160, Suzuki Gixxer BS6, TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6, and Yamaha FZ FI V3 BS6.
Advantage: the most attractive Hero motorcycle out there. Excellent driving dynamics. One of the lightest motorcycles in the segment.
Disadvantage: you lose a gear position indicator. Despite being late to the party, it does not set new benchmarks in the segment.
