Jaguar Land Rover India BS6 engine range to be expanded

  • The 2.0-liter petrol is the mainstay of the JLR range
  • Only the Discovery Sport and Evoque get both petrol and diesel options.
  • COVID-19 delays rollout of more engine options

If you are looking for a new Jaguar or Land Rover, you can imagine your desired engine and not on any offer. A quick scroll through the JLR’s model listing reveals a dramatically trimmed engine line-up. Only two models – namely Discovery Sport and Evoque – offer diesel power options, with the other models having two brands available in petrol-only form.

Will JLR’s Diseases Return?

JLR has not opened its back and has confirmed that it will return in the coming months. The carmaker had at least BS6-compliant offerings in each product line on April 1, 2020, although a company source says the COVID-19 epidemic has delayed plans to bring more engine options.

The BS6 version of the Jaguar Land Rover is expected to be offered in more locally assembled models such as the Jaguar XF and Range Rover Velar. CBU imports will also be available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines.

What is available now and what’s coming?

With a trimmed engine line-up, JLR has also rationalized its India range by cutting into a variety of variants on offer. Here’s a quick look at what you have available at the JLR showroom:

In the MY2020’s Switch, the larger Discovery has shed its 2.0- and 3.0-liter diesel offerings, along with its powerful 3.0-liter supercharged V6 petrol engine. Currently, the only engine is a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine that gives a torque of 300hp and 400Nm. There are no changes to the Discovery variants line-up; It still has four trim levels, with a third row of seats available as an option.

The 2019 Range Rover Sport had a wide variety ranging from 2.0-, 3.0- and 5.0-liter petrols to 3.0- and 4.4-liter diesels. This expansion is limited to the smallest capacity petrol mill ever built. The exclusion of more powerful engines also means that the SUV now misses some features that were exclusive to range-topping autobiography Dynamic and SVR trims.

The powertrain line-up of Land Rover’s flagship model has gone through a comprehensive revamp. Gone are the 3.0-liter and 4.4-liter diesels, and the 5.0-liter petrol. The 3.0-liter supercharged V6 petrol engine has now been replaced with a similar capacity by an in-line, six-cylinder petrol unit. To boost performance and efficiency, the new engine packs in a turbocharger, an electric supercharger as well as a 48V mild-hybrid system. In addition, the only Powertrain is available on the entire line-up, ranging from entry-level Vogue to range-topping SVAutobiography trim.
