The BMC issued a circular stating that the homeopathic drug Arsenicum Album 30 is a “preventive medicine” for Covid-19 – following an advice by the Ministry of AYUSH – and for high-risk contacts to quarantine facilities in G South and K Permitted its use West Wards, Maharashtra National Health Mission said on Tuesday that it is yet to call on the direction of the Union Ministry.

On 8 May, BMC stated that it would distribute Arsenicum Album 30, which is commonly used for respiratory tract infections and flu, which is free in quarantine facilities. However, there is no scientific evidence that it can help in the treatment or prevention of Covid-19.

The Ministry of AYUSH, for the first time on January 29, had controversially recommended shooting across the country as an antidote against Covid-19. The consultant recommended a dose of Arsenicum Album 30 for three days in a row on an empty stomach.

However, Maharashtra National Health Mission director Anoop Kumar Yadav said, “We have set up a task force to decide the AYUSH department.” An official in the state’s public health ministry said that no advice has been issued by the government to use Arsenicum Album 30 as a preventive drug for the general population.

The BMC circular had said that it would start distribution of the drug in the G North (Worli) and K West (Andheri) wards, which reported the highest number of cases in the city as a preventive drug. It has also been cited by the Ministry of AYUSH that the drug has been found beneficial. Since then, in Mumbai, the price of one bottle of Arsenicum Album 30 has gone up to 20 to 30 rupees with homeopathic doctors, with homeopathic doctors contacting housing societies to sell the drug.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani confirmed that the drug was being taken as a preventive treatment for Covid-19. “We are using it as a preventive medicine in two high-risk wards. This decision was taken based on the notification of the Ministry of AYUSH, ”he said.

However, BMC Executive Health Officer Drs. Padmaja Keskar said, “We are using this medicine only as an immune booster in quarantine centers. Later, we will use it in the construction zone and also give it to the general population. ”

“It is worrying that this drug is being administered as an antidote in the absence of any scientific evidence. People are panicking and will try anything the government promotes. They can develop a false sense of security after taking it, ”said former Chairman of Maharashtra Council of Homeopathy Dr. Bahubali Shah said.

In Malad, Andheri and Worli, private homeopathic physicians are using BMC circulars to sell the drug. In Veera Desai, Andheri West, homeopath Priyam Sharma is selling the drug to more than 100 people a day at a cost of Rs 30. People in his clinic have pasted in housing societies as a preventive drug, encouraging them to buy the Arsenicum Album 30.

In Malad, homeopath Drs. Arshi Tank said that she is selling more than 1,000 bottles a day. “I have approached the housing societies to distribute this medicine. I am keeping a description of each person, after a month, I will check their susceptibility to infection. I will compile the data to measure its efficacy. ”

Medical Officer of Andheri West Dr. Gulnar Khan said that he has not authorized any private homeopathy physician to sell the medicine on behalf of BMC nor advised the general public to take it.

While Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are giving medicines to Covid-19 patients, Rajasthan recommends it as an immune enhancer. The drug contains dilute arsenic, and has no side effects.
