Breaking: Government bans 59 Chinese apps including TikTok

On June 29, the Ministry of Information Technology banned 59 mobile applications and said they are involved in activities that are “detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, state security and law and order.”

The list of applications included TikTok, Weibo and others.

The IT Ministry said it has received many complaints from various sources, including various reports about the misuse of some mobile applications available on Android and iOS platforms to steal and surreptitiously transmit user data to servers that have locations. outside of India.

“The collection of this data, its extraction and profiling by elements hostile to national security and the defense of India, which ultimately affects the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of deep and immediate concern that requires emergency measures, “the ministry said. He also said in a statement.

The Confederation of All Merchants of India (CAIT) welcomed the move and said: “This unprecedented big step will go a long way towards strengthening CAIT’s ‘Boycott China’ campaign.”

Among the applications Tik Tok, Club Factory, Xiaomi, Cam Scanner, UC Browser are expected to be the most affected due to the high volume of users.

Sreedhar Prasad, an independent e-commerce analyst, told Moneycontrol: “Most of these applications are widely adopted and used across India. This is a massive move considering the globalized nature of today’s digital world.”

“However, we must bear in mind that China was ahead of each country in establishing its internal basic rules by banning many international social media applications, limiting its digital ecosystem. India may have the largest user base outside of China to many of these apps and if some of the other countries do the same this could lead to a very strong rejection movement across the globe this is a great opportunity for local alternatives across the globe to capture these customers already that the usage habit has been created by these Chinese apps: TikTok and ShareIt are classic examples, “added Prasad.
