Food Lion grocery stores to add shields at cash registers

New Delhi : The Salisbury-based grocery chain Food Lion on Friday announced that it will installing plexiglass safety guards at the cash registers to ensure social distancing remains to keep store employees and customers safe from the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

A news report claimed that the installation of the protective plexiglass has already begun. The process is likely to be completed within the next week.

According to a report by USA Today, Walmart is also thinking on the same lines and plans to install plexiglass “sneeze guards” at its stores over the next several weeks.

In another safety measure, Food Lion has noted in its press release that they will be removing hand baskets and small shopping carts from stores and asking shoppers to use large carts to increase distance from other shoppers, noting that two cart lengths is approximately the 6-foot space recommended by the CDC.

The grocery store has also set a designated shopping time for the seniors to ensure their safety as they are more prone to catch the virus. 

Those age 60 and over and customers who are immunocompromised can shop 7-8 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting Monday, March 30. Food Lion doesn’t indicate that it will close the store to other shoppers during that time, but they “ask that everyone please respect these designated shopping windows for their neighbors.”
