Twitter reacts after SABC 3 airs ‘Contagion’

At SABC3, the Steven Soderbergh-directed film ‘Contagion’ aired, with Minsey Twitter doing the most on Sunday night. The 2011 film, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon, tells the story of healthcare professionals, government officials, and everyday people who find themselves in the midst of an epidemic as the CDC works to find a cure.

Since the onset of the Kovid-19 crisis, many people have been drawing parallels between the film and the epidemic. And on Sunday night, tweeps delayed everything from conspiracy theories to coronoviruses to man-made bio weapons. Things got so hot that #Contagion was trending for hours after the film was over.

What most users found interesting was that the fictional virus was first discovered in KwaZulu-Natal, hitting South Africa. Eagle-eyed users managed to take other ironic twists. Some people also cite a previous news of two French scientists wanting to test the vaccine in Africa — a statement about which one of the scientists has now apologized.
