iOS 18 is on the horizon, bringing exciting updates to your iPhone next week, including full Home Screen customization, enhanced messaging with Android users, and a new password manager app. (Note: Apple Intelligence will debut in iOS 18.1.)
For AirPods Pro 2 users, this update means five new features are on the way. Apple released the necessary firmware update this week, so if you’re running iOS 18 early, you can start exploring these new capabilities right now.
New Features for AirPods Pro 2:
Siri Control with Head Movements: You can now control Siri with head nods and shakes. Nod to confirm commands or shake your head to decline calls or messages, making it easier to interact with Siri in public without speaking aloud.
Voice Isolation: This feature, previously available on iPhones and Macs, is now extended to AirPods Pro 2. It enhances call clarity by isolating your voice from background noise. This also applies to AirPods 4.
Personalized Spatial Audio for Gaming: Developers can now use a new API to integrate Personalized Spatial Audio into games, aiming for a more immersive gaming experience. This feature is also available for AirPods 3 and newer, all AirPods Pro models, and AirPods Max.
Reduced Latency: Apple has reduced latency for high-quality audio (up to 16 bits at 48 kHz) during live-streaming and communications, enhancing in-game audio experience.
To access these features, you need to update both your iPhone and AirPods Pro 2. Here’s how:
Updating Your AirPods Pro 2:
Check for OS Updates: Ensure your iPhone is running iOS 18 or macOS Sequoia, with updates available on Monday, Sept. 16. If you want to try these features early, install the release candidate (RC) version of these OS updates.
Update Your AirPods Firmware: AirPods updates automatically when they’re in their case and paired with your Apple device. Place your AirPods in their case, connect the case to your iPhone, and open and close the lid. To verify the update, go to Settings, tap on your AirPods, and check the firmware version under “About.” The new firmware version is 7A294, replacing 6F8.
Identify Your AirPods Model: If you’re unsure about your AirPods model, check the model number in the “About” section and cross-reference it on Apple’s support page. AirPods Pro 2 will have model numbers A2931, A2699, A2698, A3047, A3048, or A3049. Additionally, the second-generation case has a lanyard loop and a speaker on the bottom, possibly a USB-C port, while the first-generation case features a Lightning port and lacks these extras.
