No compromise on rigorous evaluation for vaccine candidates: Scientific Advisor VijayRaghavan

India’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate will go through a rigorous evaluation process that will not be compromised, the government’s Principal Scientific Advisor K. Vijayraghavan said on Friday, indicating that the ICMR-Bharat Biotech vaccine is unlikely to be out until August 15 .

Phase 1 of human testing of any vaccine typically takes 28 days and is followed by two other phases, Vijayraghavan said while addressing a webinar at the Vivekananda International Foundation.

The Drug Regulator of India has given a go-ahead for trials for two vaccine candidates – Bharat Biotech Vaccine and Zydus Cadd Vaccine.

Vijayraghavan said, “Therefore, Bharat Biotech Vaccine or Xydus Cadila Vaccine will undergo a rigorous evaluation process, which will not be compromised, as explained by ICMR.”

Aiming to launch an indigenous COVID-19 vaccine by 15 August, the Indian Council of Medical Research selected medical institutions and hospitals to fast-track clinical trial approval for the vaccine candidate COVAXIN to be developed in collaboration with Biotech of India Written to do.

In response to a question on ICMR’s letter, Vijayraghavan said, “Today is 10 July and suppose that Phase 1 trials are starting today. And they start simultaneously on all 12 sites … (which is) unlikely.

“We assume that they start together. Phase 1 testing involves an injection, then another injection after seven days and then an examination after 14 days and then looking at its results before making a decision, so after 28 days…. ”

After Phase 1, there are two other phases, he emphasized.

“So the timeline for a vaccine, if we look at the global ones, will go into phase 3 trials several months after the phase 1 trial.”

Experts have cautioned against participating in the process of developing a COVID-19 vaccine, and have insisted that fast-tracking vaccine development for potential pandemic diseases is not in accordance with globally accepted criteria.
