IMPORTANT: Deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance Approaching This Week

After Hurricane Beryl swept through, residents across several counties in Texas are now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives. For many, this includes dealing with the loss of employment due to the storm’s aftermath. To support those affected, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has initiated the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program.

The DUA program is designed to provide unemployment benefits to individuals who have lost their jobs as a direct result of the disaster, including those who are self-employed. This initiative comes under the Presidential Disaster Declaration, encompassing the following counties: Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, and Waller.

To apply for benefits, eligible individuals can visit the Unemployment Benefit Services website or contact TWC directly at (800)-939-6631, available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. When applying, it’s crucial to specify that the application is related to disaster-related job loss. The deadline for applications is July 16th. Applicants may be required to provide proof of employment, which can be submitted through the TWC website, via fax, or by mail.

Local organizations, such as the Houston Food Bank, have also stepped up to assist affected residents. The Houston Food Bank continues to distribute essential supplies to flood victims across the Houston area. Nicole Lander, Chief Impact Officer at the Houston Food Bank, highlighted their ongoing efforts to support those in need. For more information on how to receive assistance or locate the nearest distribution center, individuals can visit the Houston Food Bank’s official website.

As the community works towards recovery, these initiatives aim to alleviate some of the challenges faced by individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Beryl, ensuring they receive the support needed during this difficult time.
