To support those affected, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has initiated the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program.
The DUA program is designed to provide unemployment benefits to individuals who have lost their jobs as a direct result of the disaster, including those who are self-employed. This initiative comes under the Presidential Disaster Declaration, encompassing the following counties: Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, and Waller.
To apply for benefits, eligible individuals can visit the Unemployment Benefit Services website or contact TWC directly at (800)-939-6631, available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. When applying, it’s crucial to specify that the application is related to disaster-related job loss. The deadline for applications is July 16th. Applicants may be required to provide proof of employment, which can be submitted through the TWC website, via fax, or by mail.
Local organizations, such as the Houston Food Bank, have also stepped up to assist affected residents. The Houston Food Bank continues to distribute essential supplies to flood victims across the Houston area.
