An official said on Monday that 55 inmates of Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad and four staff members tested positive for coronovirus.

Majority of the infected prisoners are those who were recently jailed, who were sent to judicial custody after their cases were heard by the courts, they said, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sabarmati Jail, DV Rana.

He said that at present about 3,200 inmates of the jail are undergoing RT-PCR test.

“During the past one week, five prisoners convicted with Kovid-19 and four prison staff were found to be infected with Kovid-19.

“To prevent the infection from spreading to the main campus, we place newly arrived prisoners in a segregation area and send samples to them for RT-PCR testing,” Rana said.

“About 80 percent of the prisoners who were found to be infected are in this category. The rest are those who were already in prison,” he said.

Rana said that necessary steps are being taken to stop the spread of the virus in the jail premises.
