Air India Express plane with 191 from Dubai skids off Kozhikode runway, pilot killed

An Air India Express flight with 191 passengers on board en route from Dubai ran off the runway while landing in Kerala’s Kozhikode on Friday night, television news channels reported. One of the aircraft’s pilots is believed to have died in the accident. Preliminary images from the crash site showed the aircraft split into two parts with debris all over the runway. At least 40 passengers are believed to have been injured, according to initial reports.

The Air India Express flight was about to land when the accident occurred. After passing the runway, the aircraft broke into pieces. The incident occurred amid heavy rain in the area. The flight skidded out of control in bad weather at 7.38pm. There were 191 passengers, including crew members on board the flight.

Air India Express flight AXB1344, B737 from Dubai to Calicut was part of the Vande Bharat Mission, intended to bring home stranded people from other countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kozhikkode Airport is a table airport like Mangaluru. A local MLA, TV Ibrahim, said that many passengers have been admitted to the hospital with injuries and that, fortunately, the plane did not catch fire.

The Air India Express plane allegedly fell into a 30-foot deep gorge while landing at Karipur Airport in Kozhikode.

Rescue operations are underway.
