Amid Covid surge, Uttarakhand looks at sugar mills to increase oxygen production

Uttarakhand minister Swami Yatishwaranand has requested officers to rope in sugar mills to begin producing oxygen to increase the availability of the life-saving gasoline in view of the rising Covid-19 circumstances within the state.

Two sugar mills in Haridwar have already agreed to the proposal, the minister for sugarcane improvement and sugar business mentioned.

In a letter to ministry secretary Chandresh Kumar, Yatishwaranand cited the instance of Osmanabad in Maharashtra the place an oxygen plant is being run at a sugar manufacturing facility and requested him to begin work in that path in Uttarakhand too.

The minister mentioned he had spoken to the administration of the Dharashiv Sugar Mill in Osmanabad and likewise collected details about a dozen sugar mills which might be operating oxygen crops in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Quoting Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Minister Suresh Rana, Yatishwaranand mentioned oxygen crops may be arrange simply in sugar mills producing ethanol.

Two sugar mills in Haridwar district, Laksar Sugar Mill and Uttam Sugar Mill, that produce ethanol have already agreed to producing medical grade oxygen, Yatishwaranand mentioned, including that the extra production of oxygen will assist loads within the present Covid-19 scenario.

Uttarakhand is grappling with the second wave of Covid-19 at each stage, Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat had mentioned on Wednesday whereas flagging off vans carrying 80 metric tonnes of oxygen despatched by the Centre to completely different locations in Kumaon and Garhwal divisions of the state.
