Centre has positioned a purchase order order for 66 crore doses of Covishield vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII), sources informed information company PTI on Thursday. The doses can have to be supplied by December of this year, the report stated.

SII has been scaling up manufacturing by enhancing the manufacturing capability of Covishield to greater than 20 crore doses monthly. Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, however, has not been in a position to begin on the manufacturing of the 28.50 crore doses of Covaxin, the order for which was put in July by the Union authorities, reported PTI.

The announcement comes days after Prakash Kumar Singh, director, authorities and regulatory affairs at Pune-based SII, wrote to NITI Aayog Member (well being) Dr V Ok Paul and Union well being secretary Rajesh Bhushan, stating that the producer has supplied 60 crore of the 65 crore doses administered within the nation thus far.
