AIIMS-P 4th dedicated Covid hospital in Bihar

Patna: AIIMS-Patna has been declared the fourth dedicated Covid-19 hospital in Bihar. The state health department issued an order on Friday directing to reserve 50% beds in all government hospitals or at least 100 beds for corona patients. Currently, NMCH, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur and ANMMCH Gaya had three dedicated Covid-19 hospitals with 2,344 beds.

The decision was taken following the recent spike in Covid cases in Bihar. As of Friday, 14,330 corona patients were reported in the state, of which 3,966 were still under treatment.

A letter issued by Kaushal Kishore, Additional Secretary, State Health Department, said that the decision regarding the AIIMS-P was taken after a proposal and recommendation from the Superintendent of the hospital in this regard and with the approval of the State Health Minister was taken. Kishore asked the AIIMS-P administration to decide and reduce the number of non-Covid patients admitted there.

Superintendent of AIIMS-P. CK Singh said that non-Covid-19 patients will stay until they recover and are discharged. “New patients suffering from other diseases will not be admitted,” he said, adding that the hospital had a total of 960 beds.

The nodal officer of AIIMS-P for Covid-19, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar said that 400 beds were already reserved for Covid-19 patients.

In a letter on Friday, Principal Secretary of Health Department Uday Singh Kumawat directed the principals and superintendents of nine government medical colleges and hospitals to create an isolation ward with 50% beds for Covid-19 patients.

The Health Department has also identified 38 districts along with nine government medical colleges and hospitals where severely curative Covid-19 persons will be treated. For example, patients from Patna, Saran, Siwan and Gopalganj will be treated with PMCH and people from Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas and Kaimur of NMHC in Patna.

Kumawat has asked the administration of hospitals to identify a separate block and start treating Covid-19 positive people from Saturday. He also directed to immediately ensure oxygen cylinders with all beds and arrange diagnostic services, support services and human resources within a week. Instructions have been given for a separate block so that non-Covid-19 patients are at no risk of becoming infected.
