COVID-19 Crisis: Despite major logistical challenges due to coronavirus lockdown across the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) has succeeded in sending emergency aid of 200,000 hydroxychloroquine tablets to the Dominican Republic (DR).

A source confirming this to Financial Express Online said that “the Dominican Republic had to leave early to help in its fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.”

Although everything was closed, the MEA was constantly in contact with various courier services that would carry consignments to the Dominican Republic. However, DHL informed that collection of consignments from India has been stopped during the lockdown period, ”the source quoted above.

Since the government decided to send emergency aid to the DR, a consignment of 200,000 HCQ tablets reached Messrs HLL’s warehouse in Delhi earlier this week.

Then the search for flights began – it was PMI to send a big shipment to New York. He said, ‘The plan was to send PMI to New York and travel from there to DR. Although it was not physical, ”he told the source.

For its citizens stranded here, the option of sending it in the evacuation flight organized by the Brazilian Embassy also did not work.

On 15 April, a Delta cargo flight DL8875 departing Mumbai for Atlanta was identified.

Describing the entire trip, the source said, “The foreign ministry team faced another challenge when they came to know that the consignment in Delhi could not be shipped from Mumbai to Mumbai. HLL was looking for alternative solutions like getting another set of the same drugs from Mumbai. Unfortunately, this did not work. All delays were due to lockdown. After this it was decided to take the Blessedart flight from Delhi to Mumbai. After approving the customs at Mumbai Airport, the flight was boarded with coordination between Blydart and Delta Airlines and their custom agent – Messrs Odyssey Logistics Pvt Ltd.
