The Asian Football Confederation has awarded India the hosting rights for the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup for the first time since 1979. The decision was taken at the AFC Women’s Football Committee meeting. In February, the AFC Women’s Football Committee recommended hosting India.
In the letter of the All India Football Federation, AFO Secretary General, Dato Windsor John wrote: “The committee awarded the All India Football Federation the hosting rights for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 final.”
The tournament will probably be held in the second half of the year. In the 1979 edition, India finished as runner-up. AIFF President Praful Patel said, “I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding me suitable to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022”.
“The tournament will encourage aspiring women players and bring about an overall social revolution as far as women’s football is concerned in the country,” he said.
The tournament will feature 12 teams extending from the previous slots of eight teams. India qualify directly as hosts. The event will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament comes as the latest boost for the AIFF as India is slated to host the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup next year. India also hosted the AFC Under-16 Championship in 2016 and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017.
“The tournament will play a big role in advancing women’s football in India. Women’s Asian Cup 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020 comes on the back, and will help us sustain, and build on the momentum achieved, ”said AIFF Secretary General, Kushal Das.
