The head of the World Health Organization warned that the coronovirus epidemic is worsening globally, even as the situation in Europe is improving.
In a press briefing on Monday, Tedros Edholm Ghebius noted that about 75% of the cases reported to the United Nations Health Agency on Sunday came from 10 countries in the US and South Asia. He said more than 100,000 cases have been reported on nine of the last 10 days – and that the largest number was 136,000 cases reported on Sunday.
Tedros said most countries in Africa still saw an increase in cases, including new geographic areas, although most countries on the continent had fewer than 1,000 cases.
“At the same time, we encouraged that many countries around the world are seeing positive signs,” Tedros said. “In these countries, the greatest danger now is complacency.”
