Most of these recalls are due to undisclosed drugs, bacteria, or harmful chemicals found in the drinks.
One of the recalled products is Himalayan Pain Relief Tea, which failed to list an anti-inflammatory medication ingredient on its label.
Martinelli’s Apple Juice was also recalled for containing arsenic, a toxic metal linked to an increased risk of bladder and skin cancer.
Natural Waters of Viti Limited had to recall about 1.9 million bottles of Fiji Water after detecting three types of bacteria and high levels of manganese, which can cause brain damage.
Recently, four beverages from Charles Boggini Company, including Pink Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade, Yellow Lemonade X, and Cola Flavoring Base, were recalled due to undisclosed food dyes linked to cancer risks, such as Red 40 and Yellow 5. These dyes contain benzidine, a known carcinogen.
Additionally, the Cola Flavoring contained undeclared sulfites, which can cause allergic reactions, digestive issues, and asthma in sensitive individuals, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic.
A former FDA and USDA advisor and food safety expert at Northeastern University in Boston, Dr. Detwiler, mentioned that drinks often hit the market before undergoing proper checks.
“There are a lot of drinks that have been scrutinized of late, and a lot of it has to do with labeling and undeclared ingredients,” Dr. Detwiler told The Daily Mail.
The FDA is under increasing pressure to regulate food and beverage companies more stringently, Detwiler explained.
